So we decided we want this to feel more like an Art Gallery than a prize contest. We found it nearly impossible to pick a “winner” from amongst the featured graphs. ![]() ![]() “We believe we have still got some headroom there.” “Our history shows that when we have taken price increases across our streaming businesses that we don’t meaningfully increase churn or cancellations,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek also noted during the earnings call. The entertainment giant also benefits from having a strong subscription bundle that has “notably lower churn” and accounts for more than 40 percent of Disney+’s year-end domestic subscriber count, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said during the company’s Nov. In contrast, the launch of Netflix’s new ad-supported subscription tier is poised to be a “handy option for consumers seeking cuts in spending,” he says, especially for users who otherwise might have canceled their Netflix subscription because of its higher price point (the standard subscription jumped from $13.99 to $15.49 a month in January).ĭisney’s streaming offering - which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ - also is well-positioned to withstand subscriber churn due to quality programming and growing subscriber reach, argues Greenblatt: “Its content library is diverse enough to entertain or at least justify its monthly cost to nearly every demographic, and the feared in-home outcry at its subscription cancellation is enough to justify the monthly cost.”ĭisney’s franchise power helps the company maintain its hold over subscribers, despite price increases, adds Peter Csathy, chair of advisory firm Creative Media. “Apple TV+ is the smallest and watched with a smaller program library, thus the most exposed to churn,” Enders Analysis analyst François Godard notes. Newer services like Apple TV+, which launched in late 2019 and doesn’t have a back catalog of content to rely on, could have the hardest time retaining and attracting subscribers with its recent price hike, which saw the monthly subscription price increase from $4.99 to $6.99. ![]() “Thus, Netflix and Amazon face the least risk in the face of increased fees.” ![]() “Time in game, and in consumers’ minds, is impactful the longer a sub has been a sub, the more likely they will remain one,” Greenblatt says. In other words, services like Netflix and Hulu, which launched in the early 2000s, have a head start over others. Power, says the streamers that will be “most resistant to churn are those that have already done so.” Ian Greenblatt, the managing director of technology, media and telecom intelligence at J.D. (Netflix’s fourth season of Stranger Things cost more than $30 million per episode, while Amazon’s Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power cost about $58 million per episode, making it the most expensive show, per episode, in history). Still, it’s a risk companies are willing to take as costs remain high, especially for prestige, tentpole productions that streamers use to attract and retain customers. And when churn is the monster always lurking under the bed, higher prices don’t exactly help persuade a subscriber to stay. Raising prices when consumers may be more conscious of their spending may seem counterintuitive, especially as streaming companies - most notably, Netflix - have seen slower subscriber growth the past year. Gillian Anderson Pursues Prince Andrew Interview in 'Scoop' Teaser Discovery, will also see a price hike of some kind in 2023 as the company prepares to merge the prestige streamer with Discovery+. HBO Max, now run by David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Such services as Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon’s Prime Video have all brought up their monthly prices by $2 to $3, signaling the end of a honeymoon period when entertainment companies, fully aware of the competitive streaming landscape in front of them, were willing to price their streamers low to attract subscribers. As Hollywood executives ponder the next phase of streaming strategy, the major services will see just how loyal their customers are as subscription prices creep up during an economic downturn. Rûach ( רוּחַ) has the meanings "wind, spirit, breath," and elohim can mean "great" as well as "god". Hamilton decides, somewhat tentatively, for "spirit of God" but notes that this does not necessarily refer to the "Holy Spirit" of Christian theology. The "Spirit of God" hovering over the waters in some translations of Genesis 1:2 comes from the Hebrew phrase ruach elohim, which has alternately been interpreted as a "great wind". William Dumbrell notes that the reference to the "deep" in this verse "alludes to the detail of the ancient Near Eastern cosmologies" in which "a general threat to order comes from the unruly and chaotic sea, which is finally tamed by a warrior god." Dumbrell goes on to suggest that Genesis 1:2 "reflects something of the chaos/order struggle characteristic of ancient cosmologies". In the Enûma Eliš, the Deep is personified as the goddess Tiamat, the enemy of Marduk here it is the formless body of primeval water surrounding the habitable world, later to be released during the Deluge, when "all the fountains of the great deep burst forth" from the waters beneath the earth and from the "windows" of the sky. ĭarkness and "Deep" ( Hebrew: תְהוֹם t ehôm) are two of the three elements of the chaos represented in tohu wa-bohu (the third is the formless earth). It appears again in Jeremiah 4:23, where Jeremiah warns Israel that rebellion against God will lead to the return of darkness and chaos, "as if the earth had been ‘uncreated’." Tohu wa-bohu, chaos, is the condition that bara, ordering, remedies. Bohu has no known meaning and was apparently coined to rhyme with and reinforce tohu. That is, on the first three days the heavens, the sky and the land is formed, and they are filled on days four to six by luminaries, birds and fish, and animals and man respectively.īefore God begins to create, the world is tohu wa-bohu ( Hebrew: תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ): the word tohu by itself means "emptiness, futility" it is used to describe the desert wilderness. This serves to introduce the rest of the chapter, which describes a process of forming and filling. Therefore, lets make the code better so that the image is set only when it actually changes. A more important reason is that when we add sound it will make a big difference if the sound of the key is heard once or over and over again. One is that it is bad programming practice to waste your computers CPU resources doing unnecessary work. ![]() There are a few reasons why we have to fix this though. Why is this a big problem? Setting the image to itself is definitely unnecessary, but doesn’t seem incorrect. Looking at the code, you can see that even if the “g” key is not being pressed, the image will be reset to white-key.png although it is already showing that image. Every time that the act method executes, the image is set again to one of the two images even though it might be on the correct image anyhow. The image is not set only once as it is changed but all the time. While this code does work, there is a problem. When the key is not pressed, the musical keyboard key goes to the up position.ĥ.3 Do This: Put this version of the code in to your own act method. When g is pressed the musical keyboard key switches to the picture of it down. Later on we will choose keys on the computer keyboard with thought and purpose, right now we just want to get the code right. Take a look at this code:įor this example we choose a letter more or less at random, (the “g” key) to get the key object to react to. You just need code that will switch the image to the white-key-down.png when the right key on the computer keyboard is pressed. Since we already sort of know how to do this when we animated our crabs walking, we should be able to do this pretty easily. The white-key.png is the image that is set to default for class Key. Those are the two states that we want to show. The scenario already has two images files, one is called white-key.png and the other is called white-key-down.png. The first task is to animate the piano key, when a key is pressed on the keyboard, we want the key object in the world to change so it looks like it’s pressed down. You can start experimenting by placing down an object of class Key in the world and then running the scenario. ![]() If you looked at the code, you know that there is not much there, the Piano class only has the size and resolution of the world, and the key class only has method stubs ( an empty method) for the act and the constructor method. ![]() Make a few of them and place them all next to each other. Explain the code that is already there and what it does.ĥ.2 Do This: Create an object of class Key and put it in the world. Start by opening the scenario called piano-1 from the Handout folder.ĥ.1 Do This: Open the scenario piano-1 and look at the code that is already there for the two classes that already exist, Piano and Key. Now we are going to start a new project, a piano that you can play with the computers keyboard.
